What are pet fleas?

Fleas are wingless parasitic insects. They live by sucking the blood of mammals and birds.

They spend a very small amount of their time actually on any one animal. They lay eggs all over the house and garden and these eggs can even last through winter. Fleas move from one pet to another and each female flea can lay about 500 eggs.

The Black Death killed between one third and a half of the population of Europe between 1347 and 1350. It was spread by fleas that lived on rats. History shows us that fleas are exceptionally good at spreading disease!

Ticks are also disease carriers and can leave your cat or dog with fever and lethargy. Lyme disease is a common tick-borne ailment.

How to spot pet fleas

Fleas are a real nuisance for dogs and cats alike. By the time you notice them on your pet, they may already have got to the level of a full blown infestation.

You're most likely to see them when you are grooming your pet. You may be getting bitten yourself. By this stage the fleas will probably be all round your house and pets, so action is required.

For fleas, prevention and cure are really the same thing. You need to be proactive to keep fleas away. Look at the following ideas for flea prevention and cure.

Why chemicals are not the answer

For years, pharmaceutical companies have created an array of treatments to rid our animals of fleas and ticks. However, the vast majority of these products contain toxic chemicals that can poison people and the pets we are trying to treat. Even if you follow the instructions, these products are not safe. The chemicals they contain can cause nervous system toxicity, cancer, asthma, allergies, seizures, skin rashes and even death.

All spot-on chemical treatments are highly concentrated and pose the most threat to our pets and us. The EPA is currently investigating all spot-on pesticide products for flea and tick control due to the numbers of adverse reactions reported, ranging from skin irritation to seizures and death of the pet.

Pesticides delivered in collars, shampoos and sprays tend to be more diluted versions of these same chemicals. In all cases they are easily transferred between pets and people.

If you are like us, you'll want to avoid exposing your four-legged family members to such toxic chemicals. You owe it to your pet to try natural dog flea and tick control.

For puppies and kittens it is vital that you avoid these chemicals. The manufacturers of these products even admit that they are toxic to very young cats and dogs.

How to treat pet fleas

It has to be said up front that fleas are incredibly difficult to get rid of.  You cannot rely on just one of these options for flea control as none of them are completely effective. Holistic flea treatment for pets involves using several of them. If you gang up on fleas with several of these methods you should be able to get rid of fleas and not have to turn to toxic chemical alternatives.

    1. Vacuum the house often to suck up fallen eggs and fleas. Make sure you vacuum the couch and other soft furnishings too.
    2. Wash your pet's bedding often.
    3. Groom your pet often with a fine tooth flea comb which will remove adult fleas and eggs from their fur.
    4. Natural flea collars are inexpensive and are a good help.
    5. Use a herbal flea, tick and mosquito spray.
    6. Purchase a flea trap that will zap any adult fleas roaming about your house.
    7. Feed your pet yeast and garlic to make them less attractive to fleas. Large quantities of garlic will make your pet unwell so ensure that you use a supplement specifically made for pets.
    8. Use a natural flea repellent shampoo when you bath your dog (aim for once every two months).
    9. Plant lavender & mint in the garden. These are natural flea repellents.
    10. Use a herbal cream to soothe flea bites on your dog.
